Our history
Regarded today as a premier student-centered research institution, Texas State University began in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School, established to prepare teachers. We’ve grown more than 100-fold from our first class of 303 in 1903, and the name change to Texas State University reflects our statewide influence.
Throughout the years, our focus has been steadfast—creating opportunities for students from all walks of life. We’re a Hispanic-Serving Institution with many first-generation learners, and our student demographics reflect the state’s demographics more than any other public university in Texas.
