To be eligible to earn your Master of Long-Term Care Administration online from Texas State University, you must have the following:

  • Completed online application
  • Nonrefundable application fee of $55
  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
  • 2.75 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)
  • Responses to specific essay questions on the statement of purpose

Focuses on regulations for the operation of long term care facilities as promulgated by state and federal governments. Reviews the minimum requirements for licensure and the standards for Medicaid certification in Texas. Also examines specific activities and functions regarding accountability and enforcement procedures.

An examination of management issues in long-term care primarily in the critical areas of human resources, public relations, and marketing. Examples include staff recruitment and retention programs, training needs analysis, and marketing plan formulation.

Students will examine the fiscal performance of selected facilities utilizing data from annual Medicaid cost reports with a focus on revenue enhancement and census development. Students will contrast various systems for determination of reimbursement and use reimbursement issues in a strategic planning sense.

This course provides an introductory overview of key theories, concepts/principles, issues, practices and challenges in elder abuse and mistreatment (EA/M). Course content includes: definitions and theories, incidence and prevalence, risk/protective factors, assessment, prevention, intervention, factors affecting screening/reporting, and the impact of EA/M on victims, caregivers, family and society.

The potential of the physical environment to play an active role in supporting independence, stimulation, and life quality for individuals with dementia will be explored in this course. Emphasis will be placed on principles behind environmental design and the importance of utilizing the physical environment as a therapeutic tool.

MLTCA 5861: Internship is a 6 credit hour course taken twice over 2 full semesters.   

This course meets the requirements for the Nursing Home Administrator Certification from the American College of Healthcare Administrators (ACHCA) and gives students the opportunity to take all necessary coursework to pursue a license as a long-term care administrator in the state of Texas. 

Please note: only Texas residents are eligible for the certification option.

This course is an internship where the student works directly with an administrator in a licensed nursing facility and is exposed to aspects of facility operation and management. Students are required to complete 1,000 hours. To meet 1,000 hour licensure requirement, this course can be repeated up to two semesters.

This course includes an overview and comparison of the organization and delivery of health services focusing on the history, development, and current delivery by organizations in the continuum of care. Through the course, students acquire foundational knowledge and management applications pertaining to governance, policy, organizational structures, stakeholders, research, and patient-centered care.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to information systems management for healthcare organizations, with a focus on incorporating analytics for informed decision-making. It covers the determination of information required by whom, design of information flows, procurement of information systems technology resources, assurance of information security, and management of systems integration. Students gain skills in leveraging analytics for insights and trend analysis, optimizing technology solutions, and addressing the unique challenges of healthcare data management.

This course addresses legal issues pertaining to health services as they relate to providers and consumers within the health care system. It covers the legal issues surrounding the relationship of patients, providers, and health care institutions. It examines managerial and clinical ethics as they relate to the provision of health services. The course also addresses policy issues at state and national levels, including how to analyze policies and facilitate policy development, from the perspective of various stakeholders. Students evaluate changing healthcare policy paradigms and decision points.

This course instructs the concepts of quality management in healthcare integrating quality improvement tools using continuous process improvement methodologies. Students learn to translate healthcare quality management theory, concepts, and knowledge into practice by applying statistical methods and analysis to eliminate defects, reduce waste, and deliver excellent patient/client experiences. Students gain familiarity with the quality standards required by federal and private organizations.

This capstone course builds upon analytical skills needed for making evidence-based strategic and marketing decisions. It covers the strategic planning/management process in the competitive healthcare industry including the assessment of both the external and internal environments and alignment of organization’s strengths and weaknesses with external threats and opportunities as well as the study of marketing functions, principles, and concepts as they relate to the healthcare delivery system. Students develop skills by analyzing a real healthcare organization and recommending strategic and marketing decisions.

Examination of planning theory and techniques within the context of healthcare management practices. As a fundamental management function, students learn basic planning concepts, specific methods, and current practices in executing and communicating a strategic and marketing plan. Students develop skills by analysis of a major case, reports on planning theory and methods, and by traditional testing methods.
